Britcon 2013 - phew!

On behalf of the organising team at the BHGS we'd just like to thank everyone - players, traders, day visitors, sponsors,  umpires, list checkers, first aiders (yes!), terrain providers, camp followers and vaguely interested passers by who helped make this year's Britcon in Manchester what seemed to us to be a resounding success !

The results are going up on this site as we speak, and there is a whole bucketload of stuff on our Facebook Page from the show as well - you can also upload any pictures you may have taken to the Facebook site too.

We'll be sending out a post-event email and survey once we catch our breath so you will have plenty of opportunities to give us your feedback and suggestions in the next few weeks, however if you attended and enjoyed it we'd really appreciate it if you can post some comments to that effect on whatever forums and discussion groups you are members of, as (hopefully positive!) word of mouth is the best publicity to help us continue to run and grow Britcon in future years.

Also don't forget our two Doubles/Pairs Competition weekends being held later this year, for DBMM, FoGAM, FOW and FoGR. Bookings are open for all of these events and places are limited so make sure you stake your claim early!

For those of you who need to plan ahead we will be running the BHGS Challenge on 11/12th April 2014, this time in Oxford, and Roll Call will return to Cranfield on 21/22nd June. Britcon 2014 will be held on the 8th, 9th and 10th of August, again in UMIST Manchester. Getting the booking system up and running for all three is on the BHGS "to-do list", but right now we're all off for a soak in (several separate) hot baths and what feels like a well deserved a rest.... !

Player Information - times and tables

Britcon 2013

The largest event in the BHGS calendar will be returning to the now-familiar surroundings of UMIST in (always-sunny) Manchester over the Friday-Sunday of 9-11th August 2013, offering a multitude of tournaments to contestants from all over the world !

The key components include:
  • 2 day trade show
  • Public entry between 1000 and 1700 hours on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August 2013
  • Six (or five) games for competitors over 3 days in most periods - even more in Saga!
  • Various competition periods
  • Prize giving ceremony for all periods
  • Juniors (Under 18) can gain half-price entry by entering the discount code BHGSUNDER18

What Else To Look Out For in 2013?

New Periods - including a 10+ game "Epic Saga" competition for the runaway success that is the Saga ruleset, as well as the debut's of two further 28mm rulesets  and WW2 skirmish game "Bolt Action" (supported by Warlord Games)

(I've read enough - sounds brilliant - take me to the booking form now!)

New "relaxed gamer" Option - we've listened to your pathetic whining, sorry, "feedback" about how unwelcome Britcon's two late night games can sometimes be, and so for 2013 there will be an option to drop Friday or Saturday night's game and just play 5 games in the larger gaming periods.

This also means that each of the "traditional" 6-game main periods will now be decided by counting player's best 5 scores.
  • Any "Iron Man" gamers amongst you will still be able to play all 6 rounds - and benefit from dropping that one score when "the other guy got all the lucky rolls" ...
  • Anyone playing 5 games can still pick up a trophy by going on a faultless 5-game winning streak

So, whether you are working late on Friday, want to save money on one night's accommodation, or just fancy a bit more time to fit in the full half-dozen poppadums,  starter, mains, AND a dessert (plus several beverages) that are a traditional part of every other wargames weekend, you can do so secure in the knowledge that you still are in the running for when the big prizes are handed out at the end of the weekend.  Learn how will this work in practice here

The Britcon entry fee remains the same no matter how many games you choose play, and you'll need to let us know when you book how many rounds you are planning on participating in, as otherwise the steam-powered BHGS laptop will seize up and explode instead of processing the draw after each round... but we are sure many of you will just be grateful to have the choice this time around :-)

(I've always said you should have done something like this years ago. I'm definitely coming now - take me to the booking form !)

Prices Frozen - we know there is a recession out there, so through careful negotiation with the venue there will be no increase in basic entry fees in 2013. Juniors (Under 18) can gain half-price entry by entering the discount code BHGSUNDER18

Accommodation still optional - we've also egotiated some great rates at UMIST for a variety of standards of rooms - all still in stumbling distance of the venue and bar as usual. To be honest we'd like as many people to stay in UMIST accommodation as it helps keep the venue happy with us as tenants, but you are totally free to book and stay elsewhere if you wish. University Bed & Breakfast starts from just £33.50/night in shared accommodation, and just £36/night in an en-suite room. The online booking system for accommodation is expected to be live by the end of February.

No "2nd Class Gaming Rooms"
We will keep everyone in the two main gaming rooms, and even if we sell those out we won't be using those pokey little rooms that were so far away that they were practically in Salford - so no 2nd class citizens this year. This may well mean we sell out, so make sure you book early as places are limited.

Great Prizes

We will be offering the traditional mix of trophies and period specific prizes provided by some of our traders. In addition we are delighted that one of our Event Sponsors  Osprey Publishing will be providing a fantastic selection of their wargaming titles which will form part of the prizes on offer. These include:

  •  3 sets of 3 current Osprey Wargames Books (Dux Bellorum, A World Aflame and In Her Majesty's Name)
  • 2 sets of the entire Field of Glory Napoleonic series of games (3 books in total)
  • 2 sets of the entire Force on Force set (1 Hardback rules set plus 8 army lists)
  • 2 sets of the entire Field of Glory Renaissance set

( OK then - that's sealed the deal for me - take me to the booking form NOW!)
