Old Photos....

Pictures from years gone by...

In the background to running events the BHGS are steadily also transferring results from previous competitions from the "old" BHGS website to this new one.

It's a time consuming and frankly rather dull task, but occasionally it does throw up some real gems - and this week we've been lucky enough to find a treasure-trove of pictures taken at past events, going back in some cases to the early 90's.

These will all appear on the relevant pages of our "previous results" section once we complete uploading all of the results for the competitions they relate to, however we've also posted a "taster" bundle of some of the best of these photos from across the years on our Facebook site.

So if, you want to see what your clubmates were wearing in 1994, or what you looked like when you still had hair our Facebook Page is the place to go.

(You don't need to be "on" Facebook to view the photos, but if you are and "like/join" our page you can add whatever comments you like to the photos - or "share" them on the timelines of your friends, who may have missed spotting themselves - we're sure they'll thank you for it..!!).

BHGS Challenge 2014 - post event report and results

We are pleased to report that The BHGS  Challenge 2014 was a resounding success!

The results are now published on our site, but to give you a flavour there were some notable highlights too, with 50% more players than 2013 and a number of landmarks as well, including:

9 themes, including Bolt Action, DBM and Epic all new/returned after long absence (and Saga in its second year)

Loads of entries - 128 players, including umpires, with increased numbers in all periods

Plenty of "buzz" in the main hall

David Fairhurst leading the FOW on Saturday night, despite playing an army picked up from scratch and not having played FOW for nearly 2 years

Darrell Pearce going one better and winning the DBM overall despite not having played it at all for 2 years

The help we had setting up the tables on Friday and taking them down/tidying up on Sunday night - would have been impossible for the Challenge team of David and Tim, but there were loads of guys there to help, in particular the members of Oxford and the Trunkies, Ian Mackay, Colin, Gary and Dave Redhead and Bob Medcraft and Ray Briggs

So, all in all a great weekend.

We look forward to seeing you all again at Roll Call in June !

Following a number of requests on the DBM Yahoo group we have now added DBM to the BHGS Challenge booking form

Should we fail to secure the necessary 6 players we will of course either refund players, or allow them to transfer across to other periods

Post-Challenge glow

Challenge 2013 is now over and done, and Tim, Lynda and David are briefly collapsing with a sense of a job well done.  Thanks to everyone for coming and making it all worthwhile.  We had a lot of very positive feedback on the beautiful venue - if only it were the other side of London...

Thanks also to all the people who helped us this year - in no particular order Kevin Johnson (all round Rennaissance man), Andy Ellis (FOG:AM list-checker of unparalleled patience), Terry Shaw (FOG N guru), Matt Haywood (FOW list-checker and troop-gatherer), Adrian Escott (DBMM list-checker), Dave Madigan (last-minute FOW umpire and organiser - and winner!), Tom Frankland (SAGA Warlord), Jim Gibson (sommelier) and Dave Mather (beer-meister!) all did sterling service in order to ensure that a great time was had by all.  Special mention in dispatches for Chris Hanley for his annual Biggles game (sorry about the busted tailplane Chris!).  Chris comes every year and puts up with the incompetence of a dozen or more 20-minuters with great humour and resilience.

Full results of all the competitions will be published shortly.

Next year's event is back at LVS Ascot, our usual venue, and we have a date for your diary already - 11-13 April 2014.  See you all there, and at all the other events we play and organise up and down the country in between.

Challenge 2013 Update

30/3/2013

The Challenge venue is open from Friday for you to gather your wits and your friends and take on all comers. As usual, you are welcome then even if not taking part on the competition over the weekend itself.

Ian Mackay et al will be running some Saga try-out games, so those of you yet to experience the joys of Saga (wargames, not cruises...) can have a taste of this particular new brand of wargaming addiction!

Chris Hanley will also be running his Biggles game, which is an annual highlight for those who have played it in the past.

The tables will be laid out, and you can play pick-ups, practices and anything else that takes your fancy.

On the Saturday, like last year we intend to offer a cold buffet spread for those not going out (just Saturday – Friday night is going out night! ). The halls will be open and available for gaming – last year people produced board games and card games and any other sort of games for a chance to pull some golden oldies and old favourites out and enjoy them in the company of your mates.

It would be very helpful to me if people could please let me know a.s.a.p. whether they will want the Saturday night buffet, in an effort to avoid too much over- or under-catering. Cost will be a few quid, somewhat dependent upon how much take-up I have!

And, of course, the BHGS fully-licensed beer fridge will be available throughout the weekend, while stocks last...
